The Chinese Kitchen Garden / for Timber Press. Book development, art direction, cover and text design.

The Chinese Kitchen Garden is author Wendy Kiang-Spray’s loving guide to growing Asian vegetables throughout the seasons. I worked with the author (and her mom!) to craft the uniquely multi-lingual plant entries, which display the plant name in English, Latin, Mandarin and Cantonese, accompanied by the name in a vertical hanzi setting.

7 x 9 in, 112 pages, smythe-sewn paperback.

The cover, featuring the title in both Latin and hanzi characters, and a spot varnished spine hinge.

Plant list entry, showing the multiple languages and scripts.

The hanzi characters on the front, embellished with spot varnish.

Title page and frontispiece.

A text spread from the plant section, showing sidebar and caption design.
